Why do people think she did it?

There is one main conspiracy theory surrounding the death of Kurt Cobain in 1994. The theory thinks that Kurt Cobain was killed by his wife, Courtney Love. The official cause of death is suicide, so I do not think it is appropriate to label his legal cause of death a conspiracy.

The main conspiracy around Kurt Cobain’s death is that he did not commit suicide. Rather, his wife Courtney Love murdered him because he was receiving more fame and money. Prior to his death, Love hired Tom Grant to investigate the whereabouts of her husband in April of 1994 (Soaked in Bleach 1). the private investigator Love hired stated, “I had been involved in some missing cases before and some red flags started popping up immediately, so I began recording every conversation I have with Courtney during the entire period I worked for her,” (1). One interaction between Grant and Love is recorded regarding the effect Kurt’s disappearance had on her. Love argued,

I didn’t think about it when it first happened, but all publicity is good publicity... when he left, I got very depressed and had to be hospitalized for a nervous breakdown and then it’d appear I attempted suicide. That way there’s no drugs involved, and the sympathy goes to me. Press already perceives me as fucked up and tragic anyway so I don’t know I have like a record coming out so like selfishly it would help sell records,” (1)

She also told Tom Grant that she would have liked to have been in Nirvana. This quote is especially significant because it focuses on how Courtney Love saw her own husband missing as something that would benefit her career, rather than being concerned for him.

During the leadup to Cobain’s disappearance and death, the couple was having issues already. Reportedly, Rosemary Carroll, Frances Bean Cobain’s godmother, and their lawyer was called by Courtney Love and asked her to find, “the meanest divorce lawyer she could find” and if there was any way to ignore their prenup. Shortly after, Kurt Cobain called Carrol and said to take Courtney out of his will (1). This chain of events reinforces the speculation of Courtney Love’s thirst for fame and fortune. It is plausible that the phone calls to Rosemary Carrol were in result of an argument regarding their money.

One red flag is that Love filed a missing person's report on Cobain in his mother’s name (1). She claimed that it was because no one would take her seriously, but it is suspicious she did not even contact his mother. Courtney Love repeatedly told Tom Grant to stay away from their house in Seattle, Washington, and that surveillance was not needed because she trusted he would not go there. Which later turned out to be his place of death.

Grant communicated with one of Cobain’s best friends growing up to gain insight into who he was as a person and realized Courtney Love and his best friend describe him completely opposite. Carlson did not believe Kurt Cobain was suicidal at all and that he would not have bought him a gun if he thought otherwise. Courtney Love voiced to many that she believed her husband was suicidal and was an active danger to himself, which is how the gun in his house was originally confiscated after a burglary. Carlson bought Cobain another gun because he believed he was in danger and needed to be able to protect himself (1). Love truly did her best to emphasize to the public that Kurt was suicidal by even naming it the “Cobain Curse.” Love told various media and networks that Cobain had three uncles who had taken their own lives and her husband was just another victim of this curse. However, it can be argued she was attempting to draw attention away from herself and find a scapegoat to blame his death on even when two out of three of the uncles died from accidents instead of suicide.

On that morning Kurt Cobain was found with a self-inflicted gunshot to the head. However, the way Cobain was found holding the gun and where the shotgun shell landed did not make sense mathematically. Since the shell was found on the opposite side it should have been on, based on the way Kurt was found holding the weapon, this gives more questionable evidence that makes his death look staged (Schedule A).

In 1994, the icon Kurt Cobain was found dead with his cause of death presumed to be suicide. Then also was the start of the conspiracy theory claiming Courtney Love took part in her husband’s death. Even now, twenty-seven years later, it is still unknown who was truly behind Kurt Cobain’s death.
